Widows may be forced to participate in various rituals and cultural practices during the time their husbands pass away.

These practices can constitute human rights violations and compound the physical and emotional trauma that the death of a loved one already brings.

The widow is isolated and neglected at a time when support and comfort from relatives is needed the most. Many of our WOW widows spent weeks, sometimes months isolated after the death of their husband because of their village traditions.

These are just some of the stories we have heard from the women we work alongside in rural Kenya. It is recognised that sustainable development and the reduction in poverty across the globe can only be achieved by empowering women and ensuring their rights.
